What is Sandblasting?
Sandblasting is a controlled etching method. We design and cut a bespoke stencil, apply it to the stone surface, then blast fine abrasive media across the exposed areas to carve clean, accurate letters or motifs. The result is a uniform, contemporary finish that’s ideal when you need consistent typefaces, repeatable elements, or faster turnaround than traditional hand-cut methods.
The Benefits of Sandblasting

Precision
Sandblasting delivers sharp, even results every single time, making it ideal for clean, modern lettering and intricate design work. Every curve, serif and detail is reproduced exactly as designed

Efficiency
Sandblasting allows for faster turnaround without compromising quality. Once your design is approved, the process is highly streamlined – from stencil cutting to blasting and finishing.

Cost-effective
Sandblasting uses precision machinery & stencils rather than hand tools, significantly reducing labour time while refining the appearance. It’s an excellent option for professional stonework on a budget.

Kirsten LockTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I enjoyed this workshop very much. I have never done stone carving before and Killian, with his expertise, showed us how to do it. Once I got used to holding the tools and losing the fear of doing it wrong, I found it very rewarding. I highly recommend to do the 2 days. On the second day I felt more confident and I could finish my piece. I also recommend to have in mind what you want to do and to keep it simple. I carved a cat and was very happy with the result. The atmosphere in the workshop was relaxed and there was plenty of drinks and snacks. Thank you Killian and Zacharias, for this lovely experience. I recently had the pleasure of taking part in the Stone Carving Workshop in Ballyknockan, overlooking the beautiful Blessington lakes. It was an unforgettable experience. We gave Killian a call back a few weeks ago to do some work on our property and I honestly couldn't recommend him enough. Professionalism & work was top class. When we gave him a call, he didn't just listen, he knew exactly what he was talking about and it gave us alot of peace of mind. As I mentioned before, Killian is a gentleman and at the top of his game. I couldn't recommend him enough and we will always be using him in the future. FAQs
How does sandblasting differ from hand-cut lettering?
What stones are suitable for sandblasting?
Sandblasting works beautifully on granite, limestone, marble and other durable natural stones. O’Flaherty Stone regularly uses Ballyknockan granite and other premium materials selected for their fine grain and strength. The surface needs to be firm enough to take a clean, even etch without flaking.
Can you sandblast logos, crests or images?
Yes, we can reproduce logos, coats of arms and decorative motifs with excellent precision. Vector artwork such as SVG or EPS files ensures sharp edges and accurate proportions. Our team can also help refine your artwork to make it suitable for stone carving.
Can existing inscriptions be re-blasted or restored?
In many cases, yes. We can refresh faded or weathered lettering by carefully re-blasting the original inscription. If the stone has deteriorated or the lettering is too shallow, we may recommend a new inscription or a hand-cut restoration for the best result.
Can the letters be painted or coloured?
Yes. Many clients choose to have paint applied to enhance visibility or match a particular colour scheme. We offer a range of finishes, from subtle tones that complement the stone to bold colours for high contrast.
How long does sandblasted lettering last?
When completed on quality stone, sandblasted inscriptions can last for decades with minimal maintenance. Over time, paint-filled letters may need re-coating, particularly on outdoor memorials exposed to the weather. The engraved lettering itself remains clear and permanent.
