Stone Step Restoration

The Common Cause
A very common problem with stone steps, especially on buildings dating from 100-200 years old and onwards, is improper use of the wrong material and modern solutions such as cement mortars and coating the masonry in non-breathable sealants. These buildings are constructed from natural breathable materials such as stone, brick, and timber. From the 1950βs the use of cementitious mortar became the norm causing a step away from more traditional materials, specifically the use of Lime mortar. Overtime, as is the norm with traditional build buildings with natural materials, there is movement and flexibility over the course of 100-200 years and onward, adding to the advantage pf using Lime mortar as it is a breathable material. But with cement this is not the case and with stone being naturally porous, moisture can be trapped causing damp and wet rot, resulting in major structural damage over time. This is where we come in.
The Process
When it comes to stone step repair, the process begins with raking out and removing all the old cementitious mortar to expose the inner bed joints. Then, after brushing back and cleaning the masonry joints, we wash and clean the steps in preparation for the lime mortar. The great advantage of lime is its breathability, flexibility, and its natural material. Pointing styles can vary from flush and brush, recessed to struck pointing depending on the clientβs preference.

Kirsten LockTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I enjoyed this workshop very much. I have never done stone carving before and Killian, with his expertise, showed us how to do it. Once I got used to holding the tools and losing the fear of doing it wrong, I found it very rewarding. I highly recommend to do the 2 days. On the second day I felt more confident and I could finish my piece. I also recommend to have in mind what you want to do and to keep it simple. I carved a cat and was very happy with the result. The atmosphere in the workshop was relaxed and there was plenty of drinks and snacks. Thank you Killian and Zacharias, for this lovely experience.
