Killian O’Flaherty initiated O’Flaherty Stone, focusing on conservation and restoration work, offering a variety of specialized services including architectural work, headstones, hand-cut lettering, sculpture work, lime works, pointing, and repairs. His journey into stonemasonry, despite studying architecture initially, led him to embrace his family’s craft, having learned extensively from experiences at C McEvoy & Sons Stone Masons and facing diverse challenges and opportunities in his career.
Petra O’Flaherty, the first registered female stonemason in Ireland in over 30 years, shares her journey from a nursing course to stonemasonry, highlighting her pride in this accomplishment. Her passion for the creative aspect of the trade and the joy she finds in artistic work and fitting stone pieces are emphasized. Both siblings reflect on their commitment to the craft, share their learning experiences, and express the hope for more awareness about the craft, the significance of using Irish stone, and the potential for young individuals to pursue stonemasonry as a career path.
We are 8th-generation Stone Masons/Stone Cutters based in Ballyknockan (“The Granite Village”). Nested in the Wicklow mountains, the O’Flaherty Family continues our historical family stone-cutting practices, keeping The Granite Village traditions alive.
